As EU countries started to ease lockdown restrictions, retail sales volume bounced back vigorously in May following the plunge in March-April.
For the most EU member countries, the retail sales volume in May was at most 10% lower than in February. For several countries (DK, DE, AT, NL, FI) where lockdown restrictions were not very strict, the retail sales volume in May even outpaced its level in February. On the other hand, Spain, France and Italy, as three of the largest economies in the euro area, lagged behind.
