In 2000, Romania was the poorest country in the EU. In 2022, there are 5 EU member countries having a GDP per capita in purchasing power standards lower than Romania.

While living standards improved substantially relative to EU average across the whole country since 2000, there was no real convergence among its main regions. Since 2000, GDP per capita in the poorest regions of the country (Nord-Est, Sud-Muntenia, Sud-Vest Otenia) increased at a slower pace relative to the country’s average GDP per capita level.
